Minister visits River Restoration project

14 October 2009

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Paul Lynch today met workers rehabilitating the local environment under the River Restoration project in Queanbeyan.

Mr Lynch said the project - a partnership between the Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Authority and the Queanbeyan City Council - started in December last year.

"Under the project, Council has employed a Supervisor and 10 Aboriginal trainees who are undertaking a 12-month program," he said.

"The program includes on-the-job restoration works and a Certificate II in Landcare Management," Mr Lynch said.

"During the 12 months, the team will eradicate plants that tend to suffocate the river system, and replace them with indigenous plants as well as restock native fish," he said.

Member for Monaro Steve Whan said the local community would take pride in the rehabilitation project.

"Signage will be included along the river, identifying indigenous plants and wildlife, Mr Whan said.

"There will also be covered seating areas along a walkway," he said.

The trainees will graduate on 20 November 2009, with their Certificate II and are looking forward to undertaking further studies in a Certificate III course in 2010.
