Roundtable gives young Aboriginal people a voice
19 August 2009
Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Paul Lynch today met young community leaders from the North-West, North Coast and Hunter who are meeting in Tamworth as part of the Young Aboriginal People's Regional Roundtable.
The Roundtable is a NSW Government initiative to give young Aboriginal leaders a greater say in how policies and programs are delivered.
Culture and heritage was the focus of today's meeting which was titled Traditional Culture in Modern Life.
As part of the meeting, Roundtable members and local Elders will visit a traditional meeting place at Moonbi Hills, on the Kamilaroi and Anaiwan nation boundaries.
The location has strong cultural significance with rock art, artefacts and bora rings at the site.
"The presence of Elders on this visit is a great way to encourage to further build relationships and knowledge," Mr Lynch said.
"Through activities like the Roundtable, young people have the opportunity to discuss issues that matter to them," he said.
"I am pleased to have the chance to listen to their opinions and suggestions," Mr Lynch said.
