Get behind NAIDOC celebrations (Sydney)
26 June 2009
Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Paul Lynch has urged people to get behind NAIDOC Week celebrations next month.
This year's NAIDOC theme is Honouring Our Elders, Nurturing Our Youth.
Mr Lynch said a number of events would be held throughout Sydney including:
- The Block in Redfern on 10 July - activities include hip-hop workshops, live entertainment and lunch
- Wunanbiri Preschool on 10 July - activities include cultural workshops, local entertainment including the Wunanbiri children and story-telling from Elders
- Elders and Youth luncheon and workshop at Tranby Aboriginal College at Glebe on 7 July
- The unveiling of a mural at Lane Cove Public School on 9 July
- Tharawal Local Aboriginal Land Council family day at the Picton Botanic Gardens on 5 July
- Dhuuluu Yalla Fella Aboriginal Men's (Miller Men's Group) barbecue at the HUB and Miller Community Health Centre in Liverpool on 8 July
- Western Sydney NAIDOC Dinner Dance at Rooty Hill RSL on 11 July
NAIDOC started in 1957 as the National Aborigines Day Observance Committee.
The Committee was formed with the support and co-operation of Federal and State governments, churches and major Indigenous organisations.
In 1988, the name was changed to NAIDOC - National Aborigines and Islanders
Day Observance Committee - to acknowledge Torres Strait Islander people.
"NAIDOC celebrations provide an important opportunity for government to work in partnership with Aboriginal communities, demonstrating a commitment to work with young people and celebrating the contribution of Elders," Mr Lynch said.
