Get behind NAIDOC celebrations (Central Coast)

29 June 2009

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Paul Lynch has urged people on Central Coast to get behind NAIDOC Week celebrations next month.

On 7 July, the Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health Service will host a Community Gathering and Health Expo at Gosford Showground to celebrate
NAIDOC Week.

Mr Lynch said the event would include live performances, arts and crafts, health checks and bush tucker.

"NAIDOC celebrations provide an important opportunity for government to work in partnership with Aboriginal communities, demonstrating a commitment to work with young people and celebrating the contribution of elders," Mr Lynch said.

Member for Gosford Marie Andrews said the NSW Government was pleased to be able to support the event this year.

"NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity for Aboriginal people to take pride in their achievements and express their hope for the future," she said.

On 10 July, the Central Coast Aboriginal Community Congress will also host the second NAIDOC Ball at Central Coast Leagues Club.

NAIDOC started in 1957 as the National Aborigines Day Observance Committee.

This year's theme is Honouring Our Elders, Nurturing Our Youth.

The Committee was formed with the support and co-operation of Federal and State governments, churches and major Indigenous organisations.

In 1988, the name was changed to NAIDOC - National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee - to acknowledge Torres Strait Islander people.
