In Living Memory to visit Penrith

02 April 2009

A photographic exhibition dedicated to the memory of the Stolen Generations will be on display in Penrith from 11 April, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Paul Lynch said today.

Mr Lynch said the In Living Memory exhibition would be on display at the Penrith Regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest, River Road, Emu Plains between 11 April and 28 June, 2009.

The exhibition features black and white photographs from the former Aborigines Welfare Board, taken over about 47 years.

"These photographs show the poverty and hardship of children's homes and the hard labour of boys and men working on the land," Mr Lynch said. "It also shows children from the bush visiting Sydney for annual summer camps, wedding photographs of couples on reserves and stations and studio portraits of young Aboriginal women," he said.

"Seeing this exhibition will trigger a range of emotions for those who take the time to visit the Gallery," he said.

Member for Penrith Karyn Paluzzano urged people to take advantage of the opportunity to see the popular exhibition.

"The Prime Minister's historic apology to the Stolen Generations last year has generated a lot of interest in Australia's Aboriginal history," she said.

In Living Memory is also still on display to the end of 2010 at State Records Gallery, 2 Globe Street (off George Street), The Rocks, Sydney (entry is free) between:

  • 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday
  • 10am to 4pm Saturday (closed on public holidays)
Exhibition Talks and Tours are still available for small groups of five to 20 people, weekdays between 10am and 4pm. Please call 02 8247 8660 for enquiries and bookings.

Some Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities may be distressed by seeing the name or image of a community member who has passed away. In Living Memory is presented by State Records (part of the NSW Department of Commerce) and the NSW Department of Aboriginal Affairs.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.
