In Living Memory to visit Armidale

A photographic exhibition dedicated to the memory of the Stolen Generations will be on display in Armidale starting Saturday, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Paul Lynch said today.

Mr Lynch said the In Living Memory exhibition was on display at the Armidale Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place between 22 November and 30 January, 2009.

The exhibition features black and white photographs from the former Aboriginal Welfare Board, taken over about 47 years.

"These photographs show the poverty and hardship of children's homes and the hard labour of boys and men working on the land," Mr Lynch said. "It also shows children from the bush visiting Sydney for annual summer camps, wedding photographs of couples on reserves and stations and studio portraits of young Aboriginal women," he said.

Mr Lynch said the Prime Minister's historic apology to the Stolen Generations in February had generated a lot of interest in Australia's Aboriginal history. "Seeing this exhibition will trigger a range of emotions for those who take the time to visit the Cultural Centre," he said.

In Living Memory is also still on display to the end of 2010 at State Records Gallery, 2 Globe Street (off George Street), The Rocks, Sydney (entry is free) between:

• 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday

• 10am to 4pm Saturday (closed on public holidays)

Some Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander communities may be distressed by seeing the name or image of a community member who has passed away.

In Living Memory is presented by State Records (part of the NSW Department of Commerce) and the NSW Department of Aboriginal Affairs with support from the Aboriginal Trust Fund Repayment Scheme and Photo Technica.
