ABC: Message Stick
Message Stick is the ABC's portal to Indigenous Australian information on the web. It offers several tools, including direct links to all the ABC's Indigenous programming in radio, television and internet and the opportunity for feedback, is a useful reference point on issues such as protocol, intellectual copyright and culture, and boasts regularly updated discussion forums and event diary.

Blue Mountains Walkabout
The Blue Mountains Walkabout is independently owned and operated by Evan Yanna Maru a Darug man who is a fully accredited wilderness guide. Evan has previously worked as an Aboriginal Discovery Ranger for the Blue Mountains National Park.


Community Broadcasting Foundation Grants
CBF supports Indigenous programming and initiatives. The grants assist with the maintenance and development of Indigenous community broadcasting around Australia. Grants are offered in three categories: Program grants, Development grants and Special Project grants.

Euraba Paper Company
Euraba Paper Company is the first indigenous business in Australia to make elite, handmade paper at a production level. Euraba's enterprise involves handmade locally and traditionally sourced fibres made into sheets of paper and paper products.


Festivals Australia
Funds are available from the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts to assist festival organisers to present specific cultural projects which will add to the cultural program at the festival, or enhance the projection of the local community’s cultural image.

Gavala
Gavala Aboriginal Art and Cultural Centre was established in 1995 by a family of Aboriginal artists. Gavala is now the premier place to buy authentic Aboriginal art and artifacts and is Sydney’s only Aboriginal owned and operated retail centre and fine art gallery.

Infokoori
"Infokoori is an index to the Koori Mail, a national fortnightly newspaper published in Lismore NSW, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from May 1991 onwards. It also indexes biographical information on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples from the magazines: Our Aim (1907-1961), Dawn (1952-1969), New Dawn (1970-1975) and Identity (1971-1982). 

The indexing of the Koori Mail includes references to every article, letter, review and positions vacant advertisements. Significant advertisements such as Native Title Tribunal notices, public notices and photographs are also indexed. Note that access to articles over the internet is not offered."

Metroscreen: Mentor Scheme showcase New Indigenous Directors
The Lester Bostock Scheme is a joint initiative between Metro Screen and the NSW Film & Television Office providing Indigenous storytellers with the opportunity to make a short film. Participants have access to FREE training, equipment & facilities PLUS they team up with an experienced industry producer/director who acts as a mentor to guide them through the whole production process.

Muru Mittigar Aboriginal Cultural Centre
Muru Mittigar provides you with the opportunity to participate and interact with members of the local Aboriginal community. This is achieved by the educational and enriching cultural activities that we offer. 

We have built an environment that provides employment opportunities for Aboriginal people of the area. 

Our centre also presents positive outcomes for the local community, by creating a meeting place for sharing cultures.

NSW Ministry for the Arts
The NSW Ministry for the Arts currently has three Indigenous specific grants program: Indigenous Art Fellowship, Indigenous History Fellowship and the Indigenous Music Fund

NSW Reconciliation Council Inc.
The NSW Reconciliation Council is the representative body for Reconciliation in NSW. The NSWRC is an independent non-government organisation which works with government agencies, non-government organisations and community organisations to advance Reconciliation and Indigenous rights.

RAKA prize for Indigenous script writers
The RAKA Award is offered in a five-year cycle with a different area of the arts - creative prose, drama, the visual arts, script-writing and poetry - being rewarded each year. 

In 2004, the Award will be for a particular script for film or television, including features, short films and documentaries.

Ros Bower Award
This is an annual award made to an individual artist or artsworker who has demonstrated sustained commitment and dedication to community cultural development, artistic leadership, a substantial body of work which has resulted in an improved quality of life in a particular community or communities, and an
innovative contribution to extending the range and scope of community cultural development.

European Network for Indigenous Australian Rigths (ENIAR)
ENIAR aims to promote awareness on indigenous issues and to provide information for Indigenous Australians about Europe and international organisations.


Foundation for Regional and Rural Renewal Grants
The Foundation will provide a mechanism for the private sector to work with communities in regional Australia through grants for community capacity building, project facilitation and seeding grants for community and economic development initiatives. The Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal aims to encourage innovative collaboration between business, community and government in philanthropic endeavours that will boost the economic and social well-being of regional Australia.

Indigenous Community Volunteers (ICV)
ICV is an organisation that offers wide support to Indigenous communities to pursue their community development goals in their own way, by providing volunteers who can transfer their skills to people in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations. ICV matches skilled volunteers with approved short term projects in Indigenous communities.

Our Future, Our Voice Report from the NSW Summit
From 27-29 September 2004, the Aboriginal Peak Bodies of NSW, the NSW Department of Aboriginal Affairs (DAA) and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) hosted Our Future Our Voice. This summit provided Aboriginal people in NSW with an opportunity to voice opinions on how we wish to be represented in the future, in our dealings with local, state and federal governments.

Department of Employment and Workplace Relations: Indigenous Capital Assistance
ICAS aims to increase employment opportunities for Indigenous Australians by giving Indigenous businesses access to culturally appropriate commercial finance and professional and mentoring support services through a participating financial institution. Financial support for loans ranging from $50,000 to $500,000 is available over a three year period in conjunction with professional and mentoring support services.

Department of Employment and Workplace Relations: Indigenous Small Business Fund
The ISBF provides funding for the development and expansion of Indigenous businesses and enterprises, both for organisations and individuals.

Draft Framework for Reporting on Indigenous Disadvantage
This report was released in November 2003 following a review of key indicators of Indigenous disadvantage by the Review of Government Service Provision. Consultations on the draft framework were wide-ranging, including Indigenous leaders, organisations and communities across the country, as well as governments and academic researchers. This report records the comments and suggestions of those consulted.

NSW Indigenous Fisheries Strategy
The NSW Indigenous Fisheries Strategy aims to support greater involvement of Aboriginal peoples in the management of the State's fisheries resources, and encourage the involvement of Aboriginal communities in the emerging aquaculture industry.

ATSI Information
The Office of Industrial Relations offers advice on a range of workplace issues, including awards, unfair dismissal, discrimination and conditions of employment.

Aboriginal Community Programs
The ACP is a unit of the NSW Department of Education and Training, and administers a range of funding programs which assist Aboriginal people gain employment and establish small business. The unit also provides advice to the Minister for Education and Training and other NSW Government agencies on issues relating to Aboriginal employment, education and training, and economic development.

Elsa Dixon Employment Program
The Aboriginal Community Programs Elsa Dixon Aboriginal Employment Program is an initiative of the NSW Government to encourage job opportunities and career advancement for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The program is administered by the NSW Department of Education and Training.

The aim of the program is to promote diversity, innovation and service responsiveness in the NSW workforce by reducing barriers to employment and promotion for Aboriginal people.

Employment and Training
ACDP provides training and employment opportunities for Aboriginal people in the communities in which it is being implemented, focusing on the employment of local trades people.

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations offers Indigenous job seekers and school leavers a book which has valuable information on finding and applying for jobs, handling interviews and settling successfully into a new job. New Careers for Aboriginal People
The Aboriginal Community Programs NCAP program is a free service which helps Aboriginal people to find work or improve their current job situation. Your local NCAP officer can help you plan your future career by looking at what you like to do and trying to find a job that suits you.

NCAP programs are staffed by Aboriginal people who are in touch with the needs of Aboriginal communities and have good contacts with employers, business groups and training providers within the local area.

Office of Industrial Relations:
The ATSI Workplace Services Unit assists Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW to understand their rights and responsibilities as employees, managers and employers. In particular, the Unit advises Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders on the laws relating to:



  • pay rates; 

  • employment conditions, leave entitlements and work practices; 

  • issues covering recruitment and termination of employment; and 

  • payslips and employment records.

The Unit also assists Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW to obtain information on all DIR services, and employment issues such as occupational health and safety, workers compensation and superannuation matters.


The goal of the ATSI Workplace Services Unit is to improve the employment conditions experienced by Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW. To achieve this, the Unit works with organisations and government agencies involved in assisting Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders in NSW.

Wage Assistance
Wage Assistance provides a subsidy to Australian employers who give an ongoing job to an eligible Indigenous job seeker.

Family and Children

Aboriginal Seniors Yarn Up
In May 2000, over 300 senior Aboriginal people came together for the Aboriginal Seniors Yarn Up, a three day conference looking at issues of importance to older people. This is a report of the outcomes of this extraordinary event.

Department of Family and Community Services: Stronger Families and Communities
The Local Answers initiative of the Stronger Families and Communities Strategy gives communities the chance to develop their own solutions to local issues. It focuses on funding local, small-scale projects that build community skills and resources particularly around: parenting and relationship skills; helping families to be economically self-reliant; partnership between local services; helping young parents to make the transition to work; and helping people get involved in community life through leadership, volunteering and mentoring.

Kirinari - Aboriginal Children's Advancement Society
Assist Aboriginal children whenever and whenever the need is apparent. Initiate and support proposals designed to advance the health, housing, education, cultural, moral and social well-being of Aborigines and to provide and maintain hostels, to provide accommodation for students or young Aboriginal workers in necessitous circumstances.

NSW Aboriginal Land Council: Freddy Fricke Scholarship Fund
The aim of the fund is to increase the number of Indigenous Australians considering career options in the fields of finance and commerce. A scholarship normally covers all university fees, books, stationary and equipment,and a contribution towards travel expenses, and a living allowance.

NSW Aboriginal Land Council: Funeral Scheme
The Funeral Scheme will allow members of the Scheme to apply for a $5000 payment upon the death of their spouse and/or children under the age of 18. To become a member of the Funeral Scheme, applicants must be a member of a Local Aboriginal Land Council and must pay a weekly contribution of $2 per week.

NSW Interagency Guidelines for Child Protection Intervention 2000
The Commission is an independent organisation that advocates for the children and young people of NSW.

Researching your family history
People researching their family history can apply to view the records of the Aborigines Protection and Welfare Boards held at State Records. The Board also took many photographs. You do not need permission to view the photographs, however if you wish to reproduce or copy a photo, you will need to apply through the DAA.

Quick Meals for Kooris is a hands-on cooking program that was designed to assist urban Aboriginal people to cook healthy meals for the family. It is delivered in two three-hour sessions and is very flexible and versatile. It can be used as a standalone activity or incorporated within larger programs.

Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC)
The Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) is an Australian Government statutory authority that assists Indigenous people to acquire land and to manage Indigenous-held land throughout Australia.

The ILC has a seven member board, which is appointed by the Minister for Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs. The Chairperson and at least four other members must be Indigenous.

The Board makes all policy and land purchase decisions.

NSW Heritage Office: The State Heritage Register & the Aboriginal Heritage

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS): Aboriginal people and cultural l
This is the entry point to the NPWS material on preserving Aboriginal culture and heritage.

National Library of Australia: Community Heritage Grants
To assist Australian community organisations such as libraries and historical societies, museums, multicultural, ethnic and indigenous groups to preserve significant documentary heritage collections.

National Native Title Tribunal (NNTT)
The National Native Title Tribunal of Australia works with people to develop an understanding of native title and reach enduring native title and related outcomes that recognises everyone's rights and interests in land and waters (see types of applications). It works in an impartial and fair way, taking into account the views and concerns of everyone involved in the native title process. Hundreds of agreements have been documented throughout Australia since the Tribunal was established in 1994. 

The Tribunal is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency set up under the Native Title Act 1993. It is part of the Attorney-General's portfolio and mediates native title claims under the direction of the Federal Court of Australia. 

On request, the Tribunal assists people in negotiations about proposed developments (future acts), such as mining. The Tribunal acts as an arbitrator or umpire in some situations where the people involved cannot reach agreement about proposed developments.

Housing

Aboriginal Hostels Limited
AHL provides temporary hostel accommodation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who for various reasons are unable to access appropriate shelter. The company provides for that need through its many hostels, each providing affordable accommodation along with much needed cultural support and understanding from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff who almost exclusively operate hostels.

Over the years the company has responded to emerging needs and has established a number of hostels other than transient, to provide more specialist accommodation for students, the elderly, people under medical care and those undergoing various types of rehabilitation.

The Aboriginal Housing Office directory lists licensed Aboriginal builders within NSW.

Building a Better Future: Indigenous Housing to 2010
This policy document, available for download as a PDF, talks about issues like homelessness, environmental health and access to affordable and appropriate housing.

Community Hostels Grants (CHG) Program
The Aboriginal Hostels Limited CHG program enables organisations to meet the temporary accommodation needs of their local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. These funds are primarily available to subsidise an agreed operating deficit of an hostel. The following categories are funded under the CHG program: Transient; Medical Transient (including renal dialysis); Homeless; Substance Misuse Rehabilitation; Prison Release and Diversion; Tertiary Education; Secondary Education; and Aged Care.

Housing Policies
The Aboriginal Housing Office policies should help tenants and prospective tenants find everything they need to know about housing.

Housing for Health
Housing for Health is an assessment and maintenance program being delivered by the Department of Aboriginal Affairs ACDP program and the Department of Health to improve the conditions and safety of houses and make them healthier environments within which to live. In consultation with the tenants, detailed surveys are carried out on houses, including testing plumbing and electricity, fixing damaged and unsafe areas, and replacing light switches, taps and plugs. 

Where appropriate, the Housing for Health Co-ordinator must use local Aboriginal registered tradespeople or Aboriginal organisations such as the local Community Development Employment Program (CDEP) to undertake the repair work. This encourages and supports employment in local communities, and helps to ensure the sustainability of work.

Priority Communities
Twenty two Aboriginal communities across NSW have been identified as Priority Communities under the Aboriginal Communities Development Program, accounting for approximately 70% of program funding. These communities are participating in a comprehensive program of capital works, which will include new housing, refurbishing and upgrading of existing housing, and upgrading essential safety infrastructure such as roads, footpaths and street lighting.

Aboriginal Affairs in NSW: a short history from the Dept of Aboriginal Affairs
The timeline offers an introduction to government and Aboriginal people.

Aboriginal Trust Fund Reparation Scheme (ATFRS)
Between 1900 and 1969, money was deducted from pensions, family endowment, inheritances and lump sum compensation payments of Aboriginal people. This money was placed in Trust Funds operated by the Aborigines' Protection Board and later the Aboriginal Welfare Board. 

Many Aboriginal people did not receive their money from the Trust Funds and no payments have been made since 1969.

In March 2004, the NSW Government agreed to identify and reimburse Aboriginal people who are owed money from NSW trust funds.

Aboriginal Trust Fund Repayment Scheme Announced
The NSW Government has announced that it would establish an Aboriginal Trust Fund Repayment Scheme to repay wages or other money paid into the Aboriginal Trust Fund between 1900 and 1968 and never repaid.

Reconciliation Australia
Reconciliation Australia is the body established to provide a continuing national focus for reconciliation following the end of the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation in December 2000.

Roadmap to Reconciliation
As part of its final report to the Government, the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation handed this report over at the end of 2001. This Roadmap for Reconciliation contains four national strategies, which set out the most important actions for individuals, communities, organisations and governments. The Aboriginal Justice Advisory Council
The Aboriginal Justice Advisory Council (AJAC) provides advice to the NSW Government on law and justice issues affecting Aboriginal people. It is structured into a central council, and six regional councils based on the six ATSIC regions of NSW.

Wirringa Baiya
Wirrinya Baiya is a community legal centre for Aboriginal women, children and youth living in NSW. Wirringa Baiya focuses on issues relating to violence against Aboriginal women, children and youth.

Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983
In 1983 the NSW Government passed the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983. 

The Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 was established to compensate Aboriginal people in New South Wales for their loss of connection to land. The Act established a 3-tiered network of Aboriginal Land Councils in New South Wales consisting of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, 13 Regional Aboriginal Land Councils and 120 Local Aboriginal Land Councils.

The Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC) is a Commonwealth statutory authority.

The ILC assists Indigenous Australians acquire land and manage Indigenous-held land in a sustainable way to provide cultural, social, economic or environmental benefits for themselves and future generations.

David Nathan - Aboriginal Languages of Australia
There are more than 200 Aboriginal Indigenous languages. About 20 languages are strong, but endangered: the others have been destroyed, live in the memories of the elderly, or are being revived by their communities. This site has annotated links to 180 resources for about 60 languages. About 25% of these resources are produced or published by Indigenous people.

Federation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages
The Federation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages (FATSIL) is the national body for community based Indigenous language program in Australia. The organisation was established in 1991 in response to the Australian Language and Literacy Policy, to promote the maintenance, retrieval and revival of Indigenous languages, through the support of community based language program.

NSW Aboriginal Languages Fact Sheet
The Fact Sheet from the Department of Aboriginal Affairs talks about the rich heritage in ancestral languages, their loss and revival, Aboriginal English and the role of Government. There are references to further reading.

NSW Aboriginal Languages Policy
Two hundred and fifty years ago, over seventy Aboriginal languages and dialects were spoken in NSW. Today, due to the enormous impacts on Aboriginal culture associated with European invasion, many of these languages have fallen into disuse while some have few surviving fluent speakers. 



Recognising this, the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, in close negotiation with key NSW and federal Aboriginal organisations, and in collaboration with the Department of Education and Training and the Office of the Board of Studies, and in partnership with Aboriginal people in NSW, has prepared a whole-of-government draft NSW Aboriginal Languages Policy. 


NSW Aboriginal Languages Research and Resource Centre
The NSW Aboriginal Languages Research and Resource Centre has been established by the New South Wales Government within the NSW Department of Aboriginal Affairs to play a key role in the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages in New South Wales.
