How to access the records

People researching their family history can apply to view the records of the Aborigines Protection and Welfare Boards held at State Records.

You will need to complete the application form, which includes a research declaration, family history research request and permission form. These forms must be completed and returned to the Department of Aboriginal Affairs with copies of two forms of proof of your identity.

In the event that the person you wish to research is deceased and is not a direct bloodline relative (e.g. parent, grandparent, great grandparent), the oldest living relative must provide written approval to access the records. The Department will accept a Statutory Declaration stating that you are unaware of any older living relatives.

An application form can be downloaded from this site (go to the bottom of this page) or you can contact the Archives Officer at the Department of Aboriginal Affairs on 1800 019 998 for a form to be sent to you.

The Board also took many photographs. You do not need permission to view the photographs, however if you wish to reproduce or copy a photo, you will need to apply through the Department of Aboriginal Affairs. These photos form the basis of an exhibition called "In Living Memory" at State Records NSW in the Rocks.

It should be noted that some of the language used in the files is derogatory and racist in nature. This reflects the attitudes of the period in which the records were created. You may find that there is no record of you or your family on our Index. Not all of the Board's records were kept. Some records have been lost and others destroyed when the homes closed down.

If you do not have the support of friends or family when viewing records and would like support, Link-Up (NSW) has counsellors and case workers who may be able to go with you. Link-Up's toll-free number is 1800 624 332.

State Records has produced a guide for Aboriginal people researching their family history. You can look at the guide online by clicking here or call State Records on (02) 9673 1788 to request a copy.
