Water and Sewerage

The third component of the Aboriginal Communities Development Program is the delivery of a statewide program to address both water and sewerage needs in Aboriginal communities.

The Water and Sewerage Program aims to deliver clean and safe drinking water and effective sewerage treatment and disposal. Many communities are being connected to town water supplies for the first time, and others are being connected to town sewerage systems for the first time.

Forty eight Aboriginal communities in NSW have been targeted for a total of fifty one water and sewerage schemes.

Priorities for water and sewerage works were determined by a survey conducted by the Department Utilities, Energy and Sustainability prior to the commencement of the program.

The Department of Aboriginal Affairs is working closely with the Department of Utilities, Energy and Sustainability, the Department of Commerce, local government authorities, ATSIC and other agencies to ensure that water and sewerage inadequacies across NSW are addressed.
