Housing for Health

A further part of the Aboriginal Communities Development Program is Housing for Health, an assessment and maintenance program to improve the conditions and safety of houses and make them healthier environments within which to live.
Housing for Health is being delivered in partnership with the Department of Health. In consultation with the tenants, detailed surveys are carried out on houses, including testing plumbing and electricity, fixing damaged and unsafe areas, and replacing light switches, taps and plugs.
Where appropriate, the Housing for Health Co-ordinator must use local Aboriginal registered tradespeople or Aboriginal organisations such as the local Community Development Employment Program (CDEP) to undertake the repair work. This encourages and supports employment in local communities, and helps to ensure the sustainability of work.
Housing for Health has been completed in 14 communities since the commencement of the Aboriginal Communities Development Program and is being progressively implemented in a further 10 communities.
