Job Compacts

Job Compacts is a new initiative which will explore innovative and creative measures to combat the high level of unemployment experienced by Aboriginal people, particularly in the context where the NSW population overall is enjoying a 30 year low level of unemployment.
The NSW Government allocated $200,000 in the 2007-08 financial year to support the delivery of Job Compacts.
Job Compacts are two year agreements developed on a location or industry basis to generate local employment opportunities for Aboriginal people. They are an important tool in developing strong partnerships with industry groups, businesses and Aboriginal job seekers. Interested stakeholders can join Job Compacts at any time during the life of the agreement.
As of 30 June 2008, 12 Job Compacts were established to meet a commitment made by the NSW Premier. These included the Statewide Job Compacts Memorandum of Understanding and the Job Compacts at Tamworth, Wagga Wagga, Blacktown/Mt Druitt, Campbelltown/Macarthur, Eastern Sydney, Tweed Heads, Illawarra, Dubbo, Newcastle/Hunter, Cobar and Redfern/Waterloo. These are major regional and urban areas with large Aboriginal populations and good employment opportunities.
Yarn'n Employment, Training and Consulting Services have been engaged to assist the development of Job Compacts in East Sydney, Tweed Heads, Wagga, Dubbo and Western Sydney. In the Hunter/Newcastle area, a grant was made to the Youloe-a Indigenous Development Association Incorporated. In addition, the Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation has also received a grant to assist the development of a Job Compact in the Illawarra area.
