The Department of Aboriginal Affairs (DAA) is part of the NSW Government. We work with Aboriginal people, government agencies, and the private and community sectors to promote the interests of Aboriginal people in NSW and reduce the inequity they continue to experience as a result of colonisation. Two Ways Together Report on Indicators The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, The Hon Paul Lynch MP, has launched the second Two Ways Together Report on Indicators. National Close the Gap Day National Close the Gap Day, Tuesday 22 April 2008, gives Australians the opportunity to come together and show their support for closing the 17-year life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and other Australians. NSW Training Awards Entries are now open for the 2008 NSW Training Awards. These are conducted each year by the NSW Department of Education and Training to recognise outstanding achievements in the vocational education training sector. Final year apprentices, trainees, students, as well as training providers, employers and small businesses are encouraged to enter. For more information use the link above or call 1800 306 999. Aboriginal Participation in Construction Guidelines The Aboriginal participation in Construction Guidelines were re-published in a simplified format to promote their greater use. Through these guidelines the NSW Government is creating employment opportunities for Aboriginal people in the private sector. Under the Guidelines, NSW Government agencies can require construction companies engaged on government-funded construction activities to include Aboriginal people in those projects by employing Aboriginal staff, or by sub-contracting to Aboriginal enterprises. Two Ways Together Regional Action Plans Under Two Ways Together Regional Action Plan have been developed which focus on actions to improve the well being of Aboriginal people; the identified actions are cross-agency or are genuinely new. Amendments to the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 come into effect on 1 July. Read more on the amendments or go directly to a copy of the Act and Regulation Information for Child Protection Practitioners The latest Interagency Guidelines for Child Protection Intervention (2006) set out the responsibilities of agencies and professionals in the child protection system, including interagency collaboration, information exchange and procedures for making a child protection report. |
